The Rubisco enzyme, short for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, is a crucial catalyst in the process of photosynthesis. It is one of the most abundant enzymes on Earth, primarily because it plays a pivotal role in converting inorganic carbon dioxide (CO2) into organic compounds within plant cells.
Rubisco is unique because it can interact with both CO2 and oxygen (O2). This dual ability leads to two different processes:

• Carboxylation: When Rubisco binds with CO2, it facilitates the Calvin cycle, eventually leading to glucose production.
• Oxygenation: When Rubisco binds with O2, a less productive process called photorespiration occurs.

This enzyme's flexibility, while beneficial, can also be a double-edged sword because its efficiency is heavily influenced by the surrounding gas concentrations.

Carbon fixation is the initial step in the Calvin cycle, where carbon dioxide is incorporated into an organic molecule. Rubisco catalyzes this process, where it attaches CO2 to a five-carbon sugar called ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP).
This reaction produces two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA), which are then processed through a series of reactions to eventually form glucose. This glucose can be used as a source of energy by the plant or stored as starches for later use. The process of carbon fixation is vital as it provides the building blocks for plant growth and biomass production.
Without this crucial step, plants would not be able to synthesize the carbohydrates needed for energy, impacting not just the plant but also the entire ecosystem relying on them for food and oxygen.

The concentration of gases in the plant's environment plays a significant role in determining the activity of Rubisco and, consequently, the efficiency of photosynthesis. For optimal photosynthesis, a higher ratio of CO2 to O2 is favorable. This is because:

• High CO2 concentration enhances the likelihood of carboxylation over oxygenation, thus promoting effective photosynthesis.
• High O2 levels heighten the chances of oxygenation, leading to photorespiration, which hinders the plant’s ability to produce glucose.

Photorespiration is often considered wasteful for the plant because it consumes energy and releases CO2 that was previously fixed in the Calvin cycle. Hence, maintaining a higher concentration of CO2 relative to O2 is crucial for maximizing photosynthetic productivity and overall plant health.
