Photorespiration is a light-dependent process occurring in plants, closely tied with photosynthesis. Unlike photosynthesis, which generates sugars, photorespiration is a wasteful pathway. It occurs when the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (RuBisCO) reacts with oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. This leads to the production of glycolate in the chloroplasts, consuming energy and releasing carbon dioxide. Plants usually undergo photorespiration when oxygen levels are high or when carbon dioxide levels are low. This often happens on hot, dry days when plants close their stomata to conserve water, inadvertently limiting carbon dioxide intake. Photorespiration is significant because:

• It helps remove toxic byproducts of oxygenation.
• It contributes to the functioning of the nitrogen cycle in plants.
• Though seen as wasteful, it may play roles in plant survival under certain conditions.

Cellular organelles are specialized structures within a living cell that perform distinct and essential functions. Think of them as the individual parts needed for a cell to operate efficiently, much like organs serve the body. Different organelles take care of specific tasks:
