Mitral regurgitation is another disorder of the mitral valve where it fails to close completely, allowing blood to leak backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium when the ventricle contracts. This backward flow challenges the heart's efficiency by essentially making it pump the same blood twice and burdening the left atrium with an excess volume of blood.

Symptoms of mitral regurgitation can include fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. Over time, the condition can stress the heart and may lead to enlargement of the heart chambers, called ventricular dilation, and potentially heart failure if left unmanaged. Causes of mitral regurgitation vary from congenital valve malformations to damage from heart attacks, or deterioration due to aging.
