Within every cell of a human body, there lies a central core called the nucleus, which stores genetic information. This information is neatly packed within structures called chromosomes. Humans typically have 46 chromosomes, arranged into 23 pairs. One pair of these, the 23rd set, is known as the sex chromosomes.

There are two types of sex chromosomes, X and Y. Females generally carry two X chromosomes (XX), while males carry one X and one Y chromosome (XY). These X and Y chromosomes play a critical role in determining an individual's sex through a combination that takes place during reproduction. Understanding the function and structure of chromosomes is fundamental to grasp the basics of genetic inheritance and the intricacies of the fertilization process.

The moment when a new life begins is marked by the process of fertilization. For humans, this occurs when a sperm cell from the father merges with an egg cell from the mother. During this process, each parent contributes one half of the genetic material required for the offspring — specifically, one chromosome from each of their pairs.

The fertilization process involves the fusion of a sperm’s nucleus with an egg's nucleus. Since all human egg cells carry an X chromosome, the sex of the offspring hinges on the sex chromosome provided by the sperm. If a sperm with an X chromosome fertilizes the egg, the resulting XX combination leads to a female child. Conversely, if a sperm with a Y chromosome fertilizes the egg, the resulting XY combination will yield a male child. Hence, while both parents contribute to the genetic makeup of their child, it is the father's sperm that ultimately determines the sex.

Genetic inheritance is the passing of genetic information from parents to their offspring through their sex chromosomes. Each parent contributes one chromosome to each pair, making up the child's genetic code. The process by which sex is determined—known as sex determination—is a prime example of genetic inheritance at work.

The mother always passes on an X chromosome. Meanwhile, the father may pass on either an X or a Y chromosome, a fact that is left to chance, resting on which sperm cell reaches the egg first. This random assortment and fertilization lead to the genetic diversity seen within families and populations at large. By tracing the inheritance patterns of chromosomes, scientists and genetic counselors can understand and predict the transmission of certain traits and genetic conditions within families.
