Systemic inflammation is a response initiated by the body to protect itself against infection or injury, yet when it becomes uncontrolled, it can lead to detrimental effects. When bacteria enter the bloodstream, the immune system's response can sometimes become diffuse, affecting the whole body.

This overactive immune response can result in inflammation occurring in tissues and organs throughout the body. As a result, organs such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, or heart can become damaged and may not perform their vital functions. Early signs of organ failure include a decrease in urine output, sudden changes in mental status, difficulty in breathing, abnormal liver tests, and a drop in platelet count. Quick and effective treatment is crucial to support the affected organs and to prevent irreversible damage.
