The condition commonly known as leprosy is medically termed as Hansen's disease. This term is derived from the name of the scientist, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who discovered the bacteria responsible for the disease in 1873. The term Hansen's disease is preferred by some as it avoids the negative stigma historically associated with leprosy.

The World Health Organization promotes the use of 'Hansen's disease' to help decrease discrimination against individuals affected by the illness. It is important for students to recognize both terms as they may encounter them in various scientific and historical texts.

Hansen's disease is a long-term infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. This slow-growing bacillus affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes. Patients may experience symptoms like skin lesions, numbness, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, disfigurement and disabilities.

To understand Hansen’s disease, students should know that it requires prolonged close contact for transmission and is not highly contagious.
