Dendrites are tree-like extensions that receive signals from other neurons and transport them to the soma. The soma, or cell body, contains the nucleus and is the neuron's 'control center'. It plays a crucial role in processing these incoming signals. Finally, the axon is a long, slender projection that transmits electrical impulses away from the cell body towards other neurons or muscles. Encased in a protective myelin sheath, it ensures rapid signal conduction. The junctions between neurons, known as synapses, facilitate the transfer of information from one neuron to the next, making effective communication within the nervous system possible.

Neuroanatomy, the study of the structure and organization of the nervous system, allows us to visualize and understand the vast networks that govern bodily functions and behavior. It includes the central nervous system (CNS), which is composed of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which connects the CNS to the rest of the body.

The human brain, a complex tangle of neurons and supportive cells, orchestrates thought, emotion, and movement. The spinal cord bridges the brain and body, transmitting neural signals to and fro. Additionally, within the soma is a critical area called the axon hillock, where the decision to fire an action potential, an electrical impulse crucial for neuron-to-neuron communication, is made.
