The human heart is intricately designed with four chambers that play distinct roles in blood circulation. Starting with the right atrium, it serves as a reservoir for deoxygenated blood returning from the body through veins. This blood is then transferred to the right ventricle.
The right ventricle plays an essential role by pumping this deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries, where it receives oxygen. On the left side of the heart, the left atrium collects the now oxygen-rich blood from the lungs, ensuring it is ready to be pumped to the body.
Finally, the left ventricle performs the crucial function of pumping oxygenated blood through the aorta to nourish tissues across the body. The synchronized contractions and relaxations of these chambers are vital for maintaining efficient blood flow and ensuring that all body tissues receive oxygen and nutrients.

Valves within the heart ensure blood moves in the correct direction and prevent backflow. Starting with the tricuspid valve, it’s positioned between the right atrium and right ventricle, allowing blood flow from the atrium to the ventricle without returning.
The pulmonary valve, situated between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, ensures that deoxygenated blood moves toward the lungs as opposed to flowing back into the ventricle. Moving to the left side, the mitral valve (bicuspid valve) between the left atrium and ventricle allows the smooth passage of oxygenated blood into the ventricle.

The cardiac conduction system is the heart's own electrical network that ensures rhythmic and coordinated heartbeats. At its helm is the sinoatrial (SA) node located in the right atrium. This node functions as the heart's natural pacemaker, generating electrical impulses that set the pace for the heartbeat.
These impulses travel to the atrioventricular (AV) node located near the boundary between the atria and ventricles. From there, they proceed along the Bundle of His and further divide into the right and left bundle branches. The journey concludes in the Purkinje fibers spread throughout the ventricles, thus ensuring even and synchronized contractions.
Thanks to this system, the heart effectively coordinates its beating, resulting in efficient pumping of blood throughout the body with each heartbeat.
