These are specialized neurons with the primary role of detecting different smells. Each ORN has a unique property—it only responds to specific odorant molecules, thanks to the presence of unique odorant receptors (ORs) found on their cilia. Imagine these cilia as tiny hair-like structures extending into the nasal cavity. They ensure the neurons are just the right level of sensitive to detect minute traces of odor in the air. ORNs are bipolar neurons, meaning they have two extensions. One extends to interact with odorants, and the other sends signals to the brain.
