Sterols, or steroid alcohols, are a subgroup of steroids and are characterized by a particular structure known as a sterane or steroid nucleus. Among sterols, cholesterol is the most well-known and plays a vital role in cell membrane integrity and fluidity.
Cholesterol acts by modulating the fluidity of membranes, which is fundamental for maintaining cellular function. It's not just a structural component, though. Sterols are also precursors for the synthesis of steroid hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D.
