Prophase marks the initiation of mitosis. During this phase, the genetic material called chromatin condenses into distinct structures known as chromosomes. Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids, which are connected at a region called the centromere. As prophase progresses, the nucleolus, which is the site of ribosomal RNA synthesis, disappears, signaling the beginning of the cellular restructuring. Moreover, the nuclear envelope, a protective barrier surrounding the nucleus, starts to disintegrate, giving the chromosomes more room to move.
Another pivotal event during prophase is the formation of the mitotic spindle. This structure is composed of microtubules, which are essential for guiding the chromosomes during their separation. The spindle fibers extend from the centrosomes, which are important microtubule-organizing centers located at opposite ends of the cell. By the time metaphase arrives, the cell's chromosomes are fully prepared for alignment. This stage is characterized by the organization of chromosomes along an imaginary line known as the metaphase plate, centrally positioned in the cell. The precise alignment is vital because it ensures that when the sister chromatids are separated, each new cell will receive an exact copy of the chromosomes.
The process of achieving this alignment is facilitated by the mitotic spindle. Microtubules attach to the chromosomes at specialized regions called kinetochores, found on each chromatid's centromere. These microtubules exert tension on the chromosomes to hold them in place at the metaphase plate. The symmetry and order achieved during metaphase are key, as errors can lead to unequal distribution of genetic material, which may result in cell abnormalities or diseases. Though often following mitosis, cytokinesis is a distinct yet crucial part of the cell division process. It is the step in which the cell's cytoplasm is divided, resulting in two separate daughter cells, each containing a nucleus and assorted cellular components. In animal cells, this process involves the formation of a contractile ring composed of actin filaments. These filaments tighten around the center of the cell in a manner somewhat akin to cinching a drawstring, eventually pinching the cell into two halves.
Conversely, in plant cells, cytokinesis takes a different approach due to the presence of a rigid cell wall. Instead, the cell forms a structure known as the cell plate at the center of the cell. This plate gradually develops into a new cell wall, dividing the parent cell into two distinct daughter cells.
