Frogs have a remarkable ability to breathe through their skin, known as cutaneous respiration. While they do have lungs, their lung capacity is quite limited. Hence, frogs rely heavily on their skin to exchange gases, absorbing oxygen directly from water or moist air. This adaptation allows them to live efficiently in wet environments and is a key reason why frogs are often found near ponds, swamps, and other damp habitats.

In order for cutaneous respiration to be effective, the skin must be thin and moist. This is why frogs are often seen staying close to water sources. A dry environment would not permit efficient gas exchange through their skin, which could lead to respiratory problems. Thus, moisture is not just a preference for frogs, it's a necessity for their survival.

Frogs, like many other amphibians, are ectotherms, meaning their body temperature is dependent on the external environment. Unlike mammals and birds that generate their own heat internally, frogs rely on external sources to regulate their temperature. This reliance makes them sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

In a moist setting, frogs can more easily find stable environments that prevent extreme temperature shifts. Moist environments tend to retain heat better when it's cold and coolness when it's hot, providing a more stable climate for frogs. If frogs were in a dry and unstable environment, their metabolism and bodily functions could become less efficient, negatively impacting their survival.

Reproduction in frogs is closely tied to water. Frogs lay their eggs in moist environments because their eggs need to absorb moisture to prevent drying out. Frog eggs don't have the protective hard shells that bird or reptile eggs do, making them highly reliant on water for maturation.

Furthermore, the young of many frog species, called tadpoles, are aquatic. They start their life in water, breathing through gills and only later in life undergo metamorphosis to become land-capable adult frogs. This life cycle illustrates the necessity of a wet or at least moist environment to ensure the continuity of the species.

The skin of frogs is highly permeable, allowing for efficient absorption of gases and moisture from their surroundings. This feature is both a boon and a bane for frogs. While it aids in respiration and maintaining water balance, it also makes frogs prone to dehydration in dry environments.

Unlike many animals, frogs lack thick or waterproof skin, which would protect them from losing water in dry settings. Their thin skin structure is essential for their survival in moist locales but limits their habitat range significantly to areas where moisture is abundant. Without access to such environments, frogs could face a rapid loss of body fluids, leading to dehydration and potential mortality.
