Refer to the discussion of ocean acidification in Concept 3.3. Ocean acidification and changes in the distribution of C3and C4 plants may seem to be very different problems, but what do they have in common? Explain.

Short Answer

Expert verified

Ocean acidification and distribution of plants are different environmental concerns, but these result from the increase in the carbon dioxide concentration due to the burning of fossil fuels and other reasons. Both these issues have serious consequences on living organisms.

Step by step solution

01

Meaning of ocean acidification

Ocean acidification refers to a reduction in the pH of the ocean that occurs due to the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere dissolves into the ocean, and the pH of the water drops, making the ocean more acidic.

One of the biggest causes of ocean acidification is fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas.

02

Meaning of C3 and C4 plants

C3 plants are those whose first stable intermediate product is phosphoglyceric acid, a 3-carbon molecule. Photosynthesis takes place in mesophyll cells in these plants. These plants thrive in damp, chilly settings.

C4 plants, on the other hand, are those that create oxaloacetate, a four-carbon chemical as the first metabolic intermediate.Photosynthesis occurs in both mesophyll and bundle sheath cells in these plants. Tropical and arid areas are ideal for these plants.

Thus, the climate and environmental conditions affect the distribution of plants on land.

03

Similarity between ocean acidification and distribution of C3 and C4 plants

In oceans, the increased level of carbon dioxide causes the depletion of carbonate. This affects the calcification of marine organismsas it is difficult for these animals to produce shells and skeletons, and existing shells may dissolve.

On land, the elevated levels of CO2 affect the vegetative growth of plants. C3 plants are more affected than C4 plantsbecause it causes a decrease in transpiration and an increase in CO2 absorption rate.

The CO2 concentrations and air temperature are circumstances to which plants have adapted, and variations in these qualities significantly impact plant photosynthesis. As a result, it affects the distribution of C3 and C4.

Changes in these elements have devastating consequences on creatures living across varied ecosystems. Thus, ocean acidification and distribution of plants result from the change in the atmosphere that contains increased carbon dioxide levels.

Draw a 鈥渂est fit鈥 line for each set of points. A best-fit does not necessarily pass through all or even most points. Instead, it is a straight line that passes as close as possible to all data points from that set. Draw a best-fit line for each set of data. Because the placement of the line is a matter of judgment, two individuals may draw slightly different lines for a given set of points. The line that actually fits best, a regression line, can be identified by squaring the distances of all points to any candidate line, then selecting the line that minimizes the sum of the squares. (See the graph in the scientific skills Exercise in Chapter 3) for an example of a linear regression line. Excel or other software programs, including those on a graphical calculator, can plot regression lines once data points are entered. Using either Excel or a graphical calculator, enter the data points for each data set and have the program draw the two regression lines. Compare them to the lines drawn.

Which of the following does notoccur during the Calvin cycle?

(A) carbon fixation

(B) oxidation of NADPH

(C) release of oxygen

(D) regeneration of the CO2 acceptor

Which of the following statements is a correct distinction between autotrophs and heterotrophs?

(A) Autotrophs, but not heterotrophs, can nourish themselves, beginning with CO2 and other nutrients that are inorganic.

(B) Only heterotrophs require chemical compounds from the environment.

(C) Cellular respiration is unique to heterotrophs.

(D) Only heterotrophs have mitochondria.

Scientific evidence indicates that the CO2 added to the air by the burning of wood and fossil fuels is contributing to global warming, a rise in global temperature. Tropical rain forests are estimated to be responsible for approximately 20% of global photosynthesis, yet the consumption of large amounts of CO2 by living trees is thought to make little or no net contribution to reduction of global warming. Explain why this might be the case. (Hint: What processes in both living and dead trees produce CO2?).
