Conjugation is a process in which one bacterium transfers genetic material to another bacterium through direct cell-to-cell contact. This process allows bacteria to acquire new traits and adapt to different environments, contributing to their genetic diversity.

The process of bacterial conjugation involves the following steps: 1. The donor bacterium contains a conjugative plasmid, a circular piece of DNA that carries genes responsible for the conjugation process. 2. Conjugative pili are hair-like structures formed on the surface of the donor bacterium that can attach to a recipient bacterium. 3. Once the pili make contact with the recipient bacterium, they draw the bacteria close together. 4. The conjugative plasmid in the donor bacterium initiates the process by replicating its DNA through a process called rolling-circle replication. 5. The replicated DNA strand is then transferred from the donor bacterium to the recipient bacterium through a protein channel formed between the two cells. 6. After the transfer, both donor and recipient bacteria contain a copy of the conjugative plasmid, allowing them to further spread the plasmid to other bacteria.

Plasmids play a crucial role in the process of conjugation. They are small, circular, self-replicating DNA molecules that can exist independently of the bacterial chromosome.
