It is directly influenced by apical dominance, a mechanism mainly regulated by the plant hormone auxin. When a plant's apical dominance is strong, lateral buds are suppressed, meaning the plant focuses its resources on extending its main stem higher. This is advantageous for plants in competitive environments, enabling them to reach for sunlight more efficiently. However, to induce a shrubby growth form or to promote more branch and leaf development, gardeners and horticulturists often remove the terminal (apical) bud. This method of pruning results in the reduction of auxin concentrations, allowing the previously inhibited lateral buds to begin growing.
