The Calvin cycle is a crucial part of photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. This cycle occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts and involves three main stages: carbon fixation, reduction, and regeneration of RuBP (ribulose bisphosphate). During carbon fixation, CO2 molecules are attached to RuBP with the help of an enzyme called RuBisCo. This produces 3-PGA (3-phosphoglycerate), which is then converted into G3P (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate) during the reduction phase. Finally, in the regeneration phase, G3P molecules are used to produce more RuBP, allowing the cycle to continue. The Calvin cycle does not directly require light, thus it is also known as the dark reactions or light-independent reactions.

RuBisCo, short for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, is one of the most abundant enzymes on Earth and plays a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis. This enzyme catalyzes the first major step of carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle. It attaches a CO2 molecule to RuBP, producing two molecules of 3-PGA. Although RuBisCo is essential for capturing CO2, it also has a less efficient side activity called photorespiration. During photorespiration, RuBisCo uses O2 instead of CO2, which can lead to a reduction in the efficiency of photosynthesis. Despite this, RuBisCo is indispensable for the Calvin cycle and, by extension, for the production of organic compounds necessary for plant growth and development.
