Understanding the structure of hemoglobin is essential to grasp how it functions in our body. Hemoglobin is a complex protein found within red blood cells, and it's responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. It's composed of four polypeptide chains, each with an iron-containing heme group that can bind to one molecule of oxygen.

In adults, the typical hemoglobin structure, designated HbA, consists of two alpha (α) and two beta (β) chains. This formation allows HbA to transport the necessary oxygen for the metabolic functions of an actively breathing person. Conversely, fetal hemoglobin, known as HbF, includes two alpha (α) chains and two gamma (γ) chains. This subtle variance in structure dramatically affects its oxygen-carrying capabilities, which are tailored to the unique requirements of a developing fetus.

Oxygen affinity refers to the strength of the bond between oxygen molecules and the hemoglobin protein. This interaction is pivotal in determining how effectively hemoglobin can pick up oxygen from the lungs and release it in the tissues.

Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) displays a higher oxygen affinity than adult hemoglobin (HbA). This characteristic is biologically advantageous, as it enables the fetus to acquire oxygen from the mother's bloodstream, where oxygen partial pressure is lower than in the lungs post-birth. The distinct gamma (γ) subunits of HbF alter the molecule's three-dimensional structure to facilitate a tighter bond with oxygen. As a result, HbF serves as an efficient oxygen transporter in the low oxygen environment of fetal circulation, a critical feature for fetal survival and development.

The function of hemoglobin centers around its role as a transporter of respiratory gases. It collects oxygen in the lungs, where it forms oxyhemoglobin, a bright red compound that gives arterial blood its color. Hemoglobin then delivers the oxygen to various tissues where it's required for cellular metabolism. After releasing oxygen, hemoglobin binds to the metabolic byproduct carbon dioxide, forming carboxyhemoglobin, and transports it back to the lungs for exhalation.

The switch from fetal hemoglobin (HbF) to adult hemoglobin (HbA) after birth is a critical developmental step. The infant's circulatory system undergoes significant changes as the baby starts to breathe air and no longer relies on the placental transfer of oxygen from the mother. The decline in HbF's presence and the rise of HbA fit the infant's growing needs, facilitating the child's adaptation to a terrestrial environment where the oxygen supply is direct and abundant.
