Glycerophospholipids, also known as phosphoglycerides, are a class of lipids found in cell membranes. They contain a glycerol molecule linked to two fatty acids and a phosphate group. The polar headgroup of the glycerophospholipid consists of the phosphate group attached to the glycerol molecule. In addition to their role as a hydrophobic barrier in cell membranes, glycerophospholipids perform several other biological functions.

Glycerophospholipids serve as signaling molecules within and between cells, modulating the actions of enzymes and interacting with proteins. These signaling functions include the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis.

An example of a glycerophospholipid with a significant signaling function is phosphatidylinositol (PI). PI and its phosphorylated derivatives, called phosphoinositides, play a crucial role in intracellular signaling pathways and cell membrane trafficking. One particular phosphoinositide, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2), is involved in the activation of protein kinase C (PKC), a family of enzymes that regulate various cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. In summary, besides serving as a hydrophobic barrier in cell membranes, glycerophospholipids also play key roles in intracellular signaling and protein interaction. An example of this function is phosphatidylinositol and its derivatives, which help regulate cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis through their involvement in signaling pathways and enzyme regulation.
